Happy Earth Day!

This month, Earth Day falls on April 22nd. To celebrate, Solo Printing is donating to the Biscayne Bay Foundation!

This nonprofit organization is based right in our back yard – South Florida! The Biscayne Bay Foundation works tirelessly to advocate, educate, volunteer and protect South Florida’s waterways. Aside from creating volunteer opportunities to assist in the cleanup of our waterways, they provide outreach programs that serve those struggling in our community. These programs include financially assisting homeless individuals who participate in their cleanup activities and also providing educational support to local students with disabilities.

Biscayne Bay Foundation, Inc.’s mission is to redevelop the community by beautifying the Biscayne Bay. With our love for the waterways we will work diligently towards the preservation of our natural resources, all the while making the environment safer for the marine life, mammals, fish, and sea life residing there.”

This past year, everyone in our community has spent significantly more time enjoying the great outdoors. Whether it’s going for a run, walk, kayak, bike ride or hike, South Florida has so much to offer! And, it’s so nice to get out of the house while still maintaining social distance.

Solo Printing’s owners, managers and employees all live in sunny South Florida. And, we are all outdoor people! Some of our hobbies include fishing, sailing, diving, golf, and hanging out at our incredible beaches.

This is why green printing has been a core aspect of our company’s mission for over the past 35 years. Solo Printing is a socially responsible “green” printer. Our company and our employees are committed to the promotion of sustainable forestry practices not just on Earth Day, but every single day – 365 days a year!

As a company, Solo understands that the health, biodiversity and regeneration of our planet’s forests depend on the ethical harvesting of precious natural resources.

That’s why it’s our mission to reduce or eliminate negative impacts in our print practices by investing in and using the best available technologies.

Here are just a few of Solo’s sustainable efforts:

• Purchase and operate energy-efficient equipment
• Impose operating standards that are safe and healthy for both humans and the environment.
• Committed to and certified for the highest of forestry standards
• Use products and processes that reduce or eliminate the emission of VOCs.
• Recycle and dispose of waste products in ways that do not harm the earth.
• Our owners, managers, and staff have personal motivations for “green” printing.
• We support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

Solo Printing purchases and receives certified products from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), handles and stores certified paper, processes it, and ships it.

Our green-efficient Komori web presses print with soy-based inks, is both environmentally friendly and makes paper recycling an easier process. For our sheet fed presses, which became operational in 2019, we use more environmentally advanced inks that have low to zero VOCs. These presses also control the reduction of paper waste to zero; eco-meters to visualize carbon emissions; high-speed UV curing system that achieves 60% power savings; equipment for direct ink-mist and VOC removal.

Solo Printing also uses multiple HVAC systems throughout its plant areas to keep air cool for both workers and paper inventory, for press operations, and for circulation and ventilation.

We shred, bale, and recycle all scrap paper. We also recycle aluminum plates that are used on our presses as scrap metal. Our company disposes containers of used inks, chemicals and solvents through a third-party vendor in accordance with the land disposal restrictions of 40 CFR 268 and Florida’s Department of Environmental Resource Management. It disposes of cleaning and maintenance rags in a similar manner.
